The Crytrappers are one of Crimmor’s three grand families and perhaps the most politically entrenched. Ostensibly noble landowners and civic leaders, their true strength lies in their deep, multi-generational alliance with the Shadow Thieves. While the Thaeldorn governs the city in public, the Crytrappers influence it from behind closed doors—through property, kinship, and quiet threats.
Though they maintain the façade of a typical Amnian noble house, the Crytrappers are anything but ornamental. Their wealth, networks, and secret holdings give them power that rivals guilds and official offices alike. In times of crisis, they can call upon hundreds of loyal retainers—and know exactly where to hide the bodies when needed.
Lady Lamia Crytrapper commands the family’s operations with sharp wit and iron will. Known for her soft voice and cutting words, she rarely appears in public, preferring to pull strings through proxies and kin. Her sister, Chynna Crytrapper, is the local priestess of Lliira, offering a softer public presence and a useful position inside Crimmor’s religious circles.
Their cousin, Mayor Corlyn Braen, provides the family with a direct line to Crimmor’s governance. Though he strives for integrity, few doubt that his appointment benefited from Crytrapper support—and their continued protection ensures his survival in Crimmor’s treacherous political climate.
The family owns and manages:
While not merchants by trade, the Crytrappers control access to many of the businesses that fuel Crimmor’s economy. By quietly owning taverns, inns, and service industries, they collect information, distribute coin, and apply subtle pressure on rivals. They also maintain secret granaries and caches beneath Crytrapper Hill—known as the Hillwarrens—connected to underground tunnels used by the Shadow Thieves.
Their influence comes from infrastructure, shelter, and silence. They house fugitives, hide smuggled goods, and ensure that when the law comes knocking, it knocks on the wrong door.
Shadow Thieves – Their oldest and most dangerous relationship. The Crytrappers provided cover and protection when the Thieves first arrived in Crimmor, and the guild has never forgotten. Today, the family offers them shelter and access to their hidden tunnel network.
Thaeldorn (via Mayor Braen) – A quiet alliance that keeps the family’s holdings secure and their enemies unsure.
Local Guilds – Though not formally aligned, many guild leaders know better than to cross Crytrapper-owned taverns or smithies.
Ophal Family – Bitter rivals in the game of noble dominance. The Ophals suspect Crytrapper-Shadow Thieves collaboration, but have never proven it.
Independent Merchants – Traders without noble protection often find themselves boxed out or “misfiled” thanks to the Crytrappers’ long memory and deeper reach.
Temple Officials – While Chynna’s temple to Lliira operates smoothly, other religious leaders resent the family’s covert dealings and rumored use of their crypts for hidden storage.
The Crytrappers speak softly but carry immense weight. Their inns are known for discretion. Their smithies never ask questions. And their enemies rarely resurface.
Their long-standing neutrality in open conflicts has earned them a reputation as “the stone beneath the dust”—unmoving, unshakable, and always present. Many in Crimmor view them as inevitable. You don’t deal with the Crytrappers. You avoid crossing them.
They are also the only family in Crimmor with the means to quietly deploy 400 armed retainers from their estates. These are not polished soldiers, but grim men and women raised on quiet discipline and paid loyalty.
The Crytrappers aim to maintain their seat atop Crimmor’s social order—not through brute power, but by ensuring that every other faction needs them more than it hates them.
Primary Goal: Maintain control over Crimmor’s noble infrastructure and back-channel access
Secondary Goal: Expand their tunnel network and influence in Purskul and Amnwater
Long-term Ambition: Replace the Thaeldorn entirely with a noble-run civic council—under Crytrapper direction, of course
Lady Lamia Crytrapper – Cold and commanding, rarely seen, but widely obeyed
Chynna Crytrapper – Her sister, beloved priestess of Lliira and spiritual mask for the family’s darker dealings
Mayor Corlyn Braen – Their cousin and reluctant ally; his role gives them legal cover and civic access
Shadow Thieves Cloakmaster – Believed to reside in tunnels beneath Crytrapper Hill; exact identity unknown
Tavernkeeper Braska Mull – Former Crytrapper retainer now semi-independent; still loyal, but wary
